How can Pilates help me with my recovery?

Being physically active after treatment can be a positive step to your recovery. Pilates is a great form of exercise that can not only help with your physical rehabilitation but can also improve your general health and and the way you feel. Pilates is a mind/body discipline which can help restore natural, functional movement and improve posture whilst giving you a chance to relax.

Movement: Movement restrictions can really impact your everyday life and perhaps stop you doing some of the things you enjoy. In class, exercises will gradually be introduced to help you regain movement and flexibility that you may have lost through treatment and surgery.

Relaxation: Stress, anxiety and low mood are common problems during and after treatment. During each exercise we focus on releasing areas of tension in the body. Whilst focusing on the task your mind will also relax. You may find that exercising with others will also be enjoyable and improve how you feel.

Alignment: You will be encouraged to be aware of your posture and to improve your skeletal alignment. Having surgery will have had an inevitable effect on your posture, we will exercise safely to help improve your alignment which is vital for your wellbeing.

Balance and Strength: You might have lost muscle mass and strength during treatment, in class, exercises will be introduced to hep improve your strength and your balance.

Energy Levels: Coping with low energy is a challenge however, it has been proven that being more active can actually help you manage your fatigue. I keep my classes small so that I can take a flexible approach to each person in the class; we will only ever work at a level that you feel is manageable. This can mean making exercises more challenging on days when you feel great or focusing more on relaxation and release on those days when you just don’t feel up to it.

Breathing: Pilates teaches good breathing techniques. It is quite possible that the physical and emotional effects of breast cancer may have impacted your breathing. Good breathing will help to improve your posture and reduce fatigue.
